While employed as Designer/Photo Editor at Zulily, I designed upwards of 20 ads a day - sometimes many more. These were made in Photoshop on tight deadlines using a combination of stock and in-house assets. In addition to color correction, cropping and removing blemishes and errors, I composited products into brand new, self-created backgrounds. Brand guidelines dictated the look of these ads. Logos and overlays were frequently added, while different versions were created for different markets. This job demanded versatility and speed. I learned some very useful Photoshop tricks that I still use today, including script implementation and hot-key shortcuts. As seen here, I also worked occasionally as an in-house model.

Older women were our primary demographic and our aesthetic was shaped with this in mind. My job was to catch the eye of a working mom hunting for a bargain.
work flow
My daily work on the production line typically involved a three step process of receiving a product image, removing it from its original background, and compositing it into a new, more compelling context that I would create (often from scratch).
The composite was then sent back to the vendor for feedback before ultimately running on site a few days later. This was a collaborative process with the vendor and my art director to show the product to best advantage. For example: watch and jewelry ads were designed to be refined and sophisticated, whereas children’s toys were composited in a more colorful, playful way.

Beneath are some examples of composited ads I designed during my time at Zulily. All of these products were masked in Photoshop, then placed in new backgrounds that I created using a combination of stock images, lighting effects, patterns, and illustration.
